Whether or not a university has adopted AI itself, it is almost certainly exposed to AI through its suppliers. That supply chain exposure demands institution-wide visibility and governance. Regulatory guidance from APRA and the OAIC offers a practical benchmark for the sector: map the AI supply chain, put contractual protections in place, and operationalise oversight. Agentic AI, legacy IT and large data holdings mean universities should treat this period as a window to get ahead of an evolving regulatory landscape.
